Massage myths busted

1. A massage is a massage wherever you go.

There are many different types of massage, and many different massage therapists. Whilst we may have received the same core training, it is quite common to put an individual stamp on the treatment and tailor it to the clients needs using a variety of techniques.

Not sure what treatment you need? Don't worry, your therapist will chat to you about this beforehand.

2. Massage spreads cancer cells through the body.

It was originally thought that massage would spread cancer cells, however, the world of science now disagrees.

In order to treat a client with cancer it is necessary to obtain the consultants permission. This is to ensure that massage can compliment any ongoing treatment.

3. Massage releases toxins.

There is absolutely no medical proof of this, and you don't have to drink more water to flush those toxins out.

Massage will help to increase blood flow to all parts of a body, and in turn transport waste products back to the liver and kidneys for them to do their detoxifying magic.

4. You can't have a massage if you're pregnant.

You can. As long as you have reached your second trimester and your midwife is happy for you to receive a massage, then of course its ok. And lets face it, you probably would really enjoy someone reducing aches and pains, lowering your stress and allowing you to relax and be pampered.

5. You can't tell the massage therapist if it hurts.

Of course you can! And you must!

The therapist can then adjust what they are doing. If you're tense and waiting for it to hurt, the overall benefit will be greatly reduced.

6. You must drink water after a massage.

If you're thirsty, yes.

It's important to stay hydrated whatever you do, not just after a massage.
