Massage and mental health

Massage can work effectively alongside conventional treatments such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and medication. Many studies have been carried out and here's some of the many benefits researchers have discovered:

1) Anxiety and depression - probably the most common of mental health issues with a huge negative impact on lives. Massage can help reduce symptoms by soothing distress and working on the sympathetic nervous system to reduce anxiety levels and improve mood.

2) Neurotransmitter and hormone balance - massage can increase levels of "feel good" neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine and lower the stress hormone cortisol.

3) Blood pressure and circulatory issues - massage reduces both systolic (pumping) and diastolic (resting) blood pressure for up to three days following a treatment.

4) Work related stress - studies have found that even receiving a regular chair massage at work (about 10 minutes long) can reduce stress-related symptoms including joint and muscle pain, shoulder tension, fatigue, headaches, and insomnia.

Science aside, massage is such a powerful tool to help someone just feel loved.

Waiting times for CBT are not getting any shorter and there seems to be a lack of support in the meantime. So now more than ever, we can support those in our homes who may be struggling. Reach out, talk, try a shoulder rub, a hand massage or just brush your loved ones' hair.
